How do we name our rabbits?
We try to have a different name category every year so it's easier to keep track of when we get our rabbits and what year they were born. For instance, in our first year, we named all of our foundation rabbits after foreign names for blue, weather, elements, planets, and celestial bodies. No matter what the yearly theme is, we try to use the most unique names possible to make our rabbits stand out (sorry, Snowflake; you just have no room in our herd!)
Our breeder (Jenna Luikart) decides the yearly theme at the beginning of the yearly spring kindling season. The kits for sale and the kits intended to eat generally get more generic names, but the kits born that get retained and the adults bought for breeding get better names to help keep track of what stays and what goes. The names are also not randomly generated, but are picked by the breeder, again, to help keep track of stock for sale and stock to keep. The kits for sale have names so buyers can tell them apart more easily, and so it feels more personal than just listing the kits as "Buck One, Doe Two, ect". The buyers often keep their names, but we always tell them they can name them whatever they want to, naturally.
We will occasionally recycle the names of sold kits and give them to other unsold kits, as to not confuse anybody. We also sometimes have rabbits for sale with the same names as our breeders, especially if the namesake seniors are their parents.
Past themes by year
Current theme: Cars; Play on parents' names
2018: Blue; weather, space, ect.
2017: Play on Parents' names
